Cities Plan Safety Changes for Roads, Paths
Transportation agencies and local officials are considering or implementing safety changes on busy roads and shared paths, though some proposals have drawn opposition. In LaPorte, Indiana, INDOT is proposing a hybrid roundabout at U.S. 35 and Johnson Road after 41 crashes and nine injuries were reported there from 2022 to 2025; some drivers are open to the plan, and a nearby business says crashes have affected it. In Westchester County, New York, preliminary plans for Route 1 could add bike lanes and adjust traffic lanes, prompting concerns from some residents and business owners about congestion and access while others favor safer conditions for cyclists. Somerville, Massachusetts, plans fall upgrades to its community path—including speed-calming measures, clearer signs, pavement markings and curb extensions—to address speeding, unsafe crossings and conflicts involving motorized vehicles; some residents support the changes but stress careful design. Rapid City, South Dakota, is gathering speed and usage data on its bike path and considering signs, markings and possible code changes amid increased complaints about speeding and close calls.
